When it comes to high-risk work, a Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) is more than just a compliance requirement, it’s a critical safety tool that protects workers, supports planning, and satisfies client and legal obligations. Here’s why SWMS matter and what’s at stake when they’re not done right.

Duty of Care

Under New Zealand’s Health and Safety at Work Act 2015, PCBUs (persons conducting a business or undertaking) have a primary duty of care to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the health and safety of workers. This duty extends to managing risks associated with high-risk activities.

A SWMS is a practical way of showing you’ve identified those risks, put controls in place, and taken steps to keep people safe

Client Expectations

Major clients and principal contractors often require SWMS before work begins. This ensures subcontractors are aligned with the safety systems already in place on site. A good SWMS shows clients:

  • Your team is competent and well-prepared

  • You take health and safety seriously

  • You’re meeting your obligations under legislation

Not having a SWMS (or having one that’s generic or poorly completed) can mean delays, refusal of site access, or worse, incidents which could have been prevented.

The Consequences of Non-Compliance

Failing to prepare or follow a SWMS could result in:

  • Fines or enforcement action by WorkSafe

  • Breach of contract

  • Increased risk of harm or fatalities

  • Reputational damage and loss of future work

It’s simply not worth the risk. A SWMS is one of the easiest ways to prove due diligence, protect your people, and deliver work safely and efficiently.

If you’re involved in high-risk work, or your client is requesting a SWMS to ensure safety, whether as a contractor, manager, or business owner, implementing a strong SWMS process is non-negotiable. At Koal, we help businesses simplify and streamline this process, ensuring your SWMS are practical, tailored, and site-specific.

Build Understanding and Confidence

That’s why Koal created our Understanding and Reviewing Safe Work Method Statements course. It helps your team:

  • Write and review them with confidence
